What Are the Major Causes of Diabetes?
By Gary J. Sanders Platinum Quality Author

Though diabetes is a worldwide phenomenon by now, the actual causes of diabetes still remain a mystery. Of course, there are certain major incidences that cause this dreaded disorder. They are as follows:

Type 1 Diabetes

In this case, the cells in the pancreas that generate insulin are destroyed and hence, there is an alarming lack of insulin in the body. This happens due to what is referred to as an 'autoimmune disorder', where the body attacks its own cells, considering them to be its enemy. This type of diabetes is often referred to as 'insulin dependant'.

This is seen among the younger generation, in people who have not quite touched their thirties yet. If a child gets diabetic, this condition is referred to as 'juvenile diabetes'.

Most researchers opine that the onset of this form of diabetes could be due to genetic factors, poor diet and lifestyles and the general environment itself. This condition could also occur due to some abnormal mutation of some hormones in the body, which act against natural body processes. The Adrenaline hormone and the Thyroid hormone are good examples of the above.

Yet other researchers claim that this type of diabetes could occur due to some infection arising from a specific bacterial attack, food adulteration and even cow's milk, in some cases! But there is no concrete evidence about these findings and so, nothing can be said conclusively about them.

Type 2 Diabetes

This is generally the non insulin-dependant variety of diabetes mellitus, which surfaces during adulthood, mostly during middle age. Here, the body produces the insulin that is necessary for its functioning, but cannot make proper and full use of it.

Sometimes, the receptor cells that normally react to the insulin in the body, stop responding to it. To make up for this, the body tries to produce more insulin and this leads to the ultimate destruction of the insulin-producing cells. This type of diabetes is sometimes referred to as 'insulin resistant'.

Usually, more than 90% of diabetes sufferers fall into the Type 2 category. Most of these people, it is also seen, are overweight. Hence, we could say that this type of diabetes affects the older generation, especially targeting those who are obese, are subject to huge amounts of stress in their lives lead sedentary lifestyles and who have a family history of diabetes or gestational diabetes.

It is also often seen that the onset of diabetes is related to hypertension, high blood sugar and high blood cholesterol.

In rare cases, diabetes is also induced by the following:

  1. Some kinds of medication
  2. During pregnancy - gestational diabetes
  3. An illness that impacts the pancreas, such as pancreatitis.
  4. An intake of steroids such as Alloxan, Dilantin and so on.
  5. Some syndromes that can result in hyperglycemia and then develop into full-blown diabetes.

No matter in what way diabetes manifests itself and what the causes of diabetes are, the bottom line is that immediate action needs to be taken to control it. Never neglect any suspicious symptom that you might experience. Make sure to take your tests on time and lead a healthy, happy life!
